It’s Memorial Day weekend. It’s important to take a minute and remember those who came before us, especially those who served in the military fighting for the freedom we have so taken for granted in this modern day.
I’m having a sale this weekend too. Jump to sale details.
Remembering Those Who Came Before Us
On December 13, 1941, just six days after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor my maternal grandfather at the age of 17 enlisted in the US Navy. He served across the Pacific theater as a SeaBee (Electricians Mate).
One of the places he saw action was on the island of Saipan after the Marines took control from the Japanese. Most of what I know about his war experience is through his photo album from his time in service. I don’t often share the pictures as they show the grimest reality of war and the aftermath of one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific.

My paternal grandfather served in the US Army in the Pacific theater. On 10 February 1945, as a private first class, he earned a bronze star, when as a medic attached to a cavalry troop in the Phillipines being subjected to “a terrific enemy artillery barrage” left his position of safety to render aid to the wounded and bolster the injured with words of encouragement.
“During the course of the action a bursting shell ignited a building in the area causing a trailer loaded with 81mm ammunition which was standing nearby to be endangered.”
Bronze Star Citation – Roland Cook
The citation goes on to say, “With complete disregard for his own safety, now Corporal Cook went boldly to the burning building and aided in extinguishing the fire. Then, making repeated trips, he hand carried the ammunition from the trailer to a place of safety.”
My third great grandfather a Union Army sergeant, gave his life on the field of battle at Antietam in September 1862 defending the Union against that traitorous cause that tries yet again to rear its ugly head.
I can trace three ancestors currently that fought for the American cause in the American Revolution.
This Memorial Day Remember Their Lessons
This Memorial day weekend, please remember the bravery, courage, and lessons of those who have gone before. Those who fight for freedom. Who fight against fascism, imperialism, and tyranny. Those known as the Greatest Generation. Those known as patriots.
Donald Trump and his incompetent circus cabal of billionaire fascists, along with the magat horde, stand against everything my ancestors fought for.
Brad Pitts character WarDaddy says to the new guy Norman in the movie Fury, “Ideals are peaceful, history is violent.” I hope we can eject this modern authoritarian circus through the ballot box. But if not, take inspiration from those who have gone before.
If you don’t already subscribe to his channel, go check out The Fat Electrician on YouTube. He is an amazing story teller, and tells the stories of some of the greatest of the greatest generation. They don’t teach this in schools. My recommendation: start with Jake “McNasty” McNiece.

Bus, Disability and Life Update
I have spent my mornings this week in the bus cleaning it from top to bottom and front to back. I have insurance, and I’m scheduled to get it registered and plated next week. Still a couple of things to do this weekend to make it legal to register as an RV.
I received notice that the administrative law judge finished her review in my case, and that my file was sent back to the local office for final review. Fingers crossed I’ll get good news soon. In the meantime, I’m scraping by for another month.
I just recently got in several buckets of new inventory that I will have to haul to the new homestead if it doesn’t sell in the next week. So it’s time to have a Memorial Day weekend sale.
