Guided Rockhounding Tours

Important Update About Guided Rockhounding Tours

I have moved to Socorro County New Mexico. I can still be available to do rockhounding tours, but require an minimum of 48 hours notice. It is a 6 1/2 hour drive minimum for me to meet you at the ranch. So accordingly and also inline with inflation I’m raising the access fees just a bit. The collection fee of $1/lb does not change

Pretty Rocks and Nature Walks

Willett Creek Agate offers guided rockhounding tours on the W Diamond L Ranch in Northeastern New Mexico. We have several thousand acres available with a number of great rockhounding areas.

Rosebud Agate

The specialty is rosebud agate, a variant of often blue, white or purple chalcedony with hematite and iron oxide inclusions that resemble rosebuds. There is often banding, and occasionally moss agate. Sometimes this material contains calcite and other minerals. You will often find that it reacts under UV light.

Rosebud agate can be found in source seams in New Mexico and Colorado, and in the Arkansas and Cimmaron rivers in Kansas and Oklahoma from upstream erosion. You may also see variations online known as La Junta agate for an area near La Junta Colorado where rosebud agate can be found.

We are located 43 miles north of Clayton on NM Hwy 370.

So if being in the middle of nowhere with spotty cell service and the solitude of nature are your thing, (oh and rocks!!) come spend a day recharging in nature and rockhounding some amazing New Mexico agate. There are also opportunities for wild harvesting, nature and wildlife photography, or just meditating in the trees and nature.

Guided Rockhounding Tours: What to Expect

When you schedule your tour, I will give you directions to the specific meetup location. On the day of the tour, we’ll meet up and take care of check in paperwork and the safety briefing. Then we’ll spend the day on prime rockhounding.

Except for special events, I only book one person or group at a time, so you have my full attention. When we’re done, we’ll have a weigh in and checkout.

You have my time for the full day of your rockhounding trip. I can be ready as early as 7 AM

What To Bring

You may want to bring a rock/brick hammer and a small pry bar. I use a small trenching shovel most of the time. You won’t need any large tools like pick axes etc.

I can loan you a five gallon bucket, but if your coming in a large group, I only have a few buckets.

Bring plenty of water and snacks. If you want to bring a lunch and eat on the trail, no problem.

Wear comfortable hiking shoes. We are generally dry, so you likely won’t need mud boots or waders.

Planning Your Rockhounding Tour

Below is information and directions to help you plan your trip to Willett Creek Agate Co. You will need to sign a release of liability and acknowledge our collection policies when you check in. You can read the Willett Creek Agate Collection Policies here.

I’m hoping to offer overnight camping soon. Please check back or follow on Facebook and Instagram.

  1. I’m an avid rock hound especially since I retired. I read that you have rose bud agate on your place. I’m interested in finding some when I can get away. To schedule a visit, do I send a message and wait for your reply?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Kelly, I have guided a number of seniors over the years. I have options for easy and difficult hikes to collect rosebud agate and other materials. And having arthritis myself, I don’t ever get in to big of a hurry.
