Shop Small: Support Small Business Rock Shops

Rock shops are a treasure trove of natural wonders, from rough agates and sparkling geodes to polished gemstones. They’re also a great place to learn about geology and find unique gifts for friends and family.

And before someone says, “but why do you promote your competition?” I don’t see competition, I see small business owners who share similar interests trying to make a living. There are plenty of rocks, rockhounds, and collecting niches, so that competition is moot. A rising tide floats all boats.

When you shop at a small rock shop, you’re supporting a small local or online business and getting personalized attention from the owner. They can help you find the perfect rock or gemstone for your needs, and they’re often happy to share their knowledge about the different types of rocks and minerals they sell.

Here are a few tips for shopping small at a rock shop:

  • Ask questions. The owner of the rock shop is a great resource for information about the rocks and minerals they sell. Ask them about the different types of rocks they have, where they come from, and how they’re formed.
  • Look for unique gifts. Rock shops often sell a variety of unique gifts, such as handmade jewelry, polished gemstones, and fossils. These are great gifts for people who are interested in geology or who simply appreciate the beauty of nature.
  • Support local artists. Many rock shops sell handmade jewelry and other crafts from local artists. Buying from these artists is a great way to support the local community and get unique pieces that you won’t find anywhere else.

Here are a few small rockhound related businesses that you can support. I’ve done business with some of these folks. The rest are part of the Willett Creek Agate community, and I hope to buy and sell with them in the future.

These are just a few examples, and there are many other great small rock shops all over the country. And before someone says, “but why do you promote your competition?” I don’t see competition, I see small business owners who share similar interests trying to make a living. There are plenty of rocks, rockhounds, and collecting niches, so that competition is moot. A rising tide floats all boats.

So, do a quick search online to find lot’s of amazing rock shops, lapidary artists, and rockhounding guides.

When you shop small at a rock shop, you’re not just getting a unique gift or a beautiful piece of nature. You’re also supporting a small business and helping to keep the rockhounding and lapidary community vibrant.
